    Lee Hazlewood LEE HAZLEWOOD 13
    (SMELLS LIKE RECORDS SLR40CD) CD

Released the week of February 1st, 2000

Newly minted from a wave of success with Nancy Sinatra, Lee Hazlewood began traveling abroad, landing in Sweden in 1970, where he met director Tobjorn Axelman. The two embarked upon a collaboration which would produce several film and music projects, beginning with Cowboy In Sweden, and continuing through Smoke and A House Safe For Tigers. The Swedish Viking label also issued two very rare but strong Hazlewood solo albums. Whereas Requiem For An Almost Lady, released in 1971, is an aching meditation on love lost (with some harrowing narration), 13, from the following year, is a horn-laden R'n'B-tinged departure from the Hazlewood formula that succeeds on the strength of its exuberantly dazed mania. Of all the Hazlewood albums coveted by collectors who seem to own every object ever made by anyone, this one really fills their drool buckets.

During this period, Hazlewood emerged as a singer and performer inseparable from his writing and production. After hearing these 70s albums, but especially 13, one gets the feeling that Lee is perhaps the best interpreter of his own ideas, and without a doubt the albums benefit from everything he had developed up to that point: a singular signature sound synthesizing swinging cowboy shanties, the rhythmic heat of rockabilly, and soaring symphonic pop, punctuated by dark, poetic lyrics at once esoteric, witty and honest.

Lee Hazlewood LEE HAZLEWOOD Cowboy In Sweden
    (SMELLS LIKE RECORDS SLR30) LP

Released the week of February 1st, 2000

    order from Midheaven mailorder

Smells Like's series of long-awaited, hotly anticipated Lee Hazlewood reissues kicked off with the release of this 1970 album-- now finally on LP! Recorded in his prime, 'Cowboy' is a singularly Hazlewoodian synthesis of rambling cowboy wisdom, moody, rockabilly-inflected rhythms, dark, poetic lyrics, hard luck tales, esoteric images, pragmatic politics and wry love odes. Vocalists Nina Lizell and Susie Jane Hokum lend their heavenly voices to this album, making for some sophisticated and come-hither duo stylings. Awarded a gold record in Sweden, too! A truly great album and a more than worthy introduction to the strange and wonderful world of Lee Hazlewood's mind.

Back Off Cupids sleeve artBACK OFF CUPIDS (s/t)
    (DRUNKEN FISH DF18CD) CD

Released the week of February 14th, 2000

    order from Midheaven mailorder

Back Off Cupids is the solo project of a gentleman named John Reis. Having fronted the highly respected Pitchfork and later the hugely influential Drive Like Jehu, Reis is best known as the front man for Rocket From The Crypt.

Recorded and mixed on and off between 1994 and 1999 between RFTC tours and recording sessions, Back Off Cupids places all his previous musical ideas along with his strongest influences (Neu!, ELO, Gories) in a blender with puree engaged. That's one frothy shake.

    Boss Hog BOSS HOG Whiteout
    (IN THE RED ITR68) CD/LP

Released the week of February 14th, 2000

    order from Midheaven mailorder

Album number five finds Cristina Martinez (NYC fashmag masthead resident and a one-time member of Pussy Galore) and company in full, full force. Ten songs, every single second of every single one total rock'n'roll. 2000 doesn't start until we've all sung along with Cristina as she coos "whoa-oh-ah-oohhhh" on "Chocolate"! Yup, smart, sexy, sassy, and very much of-the-moment, "Whiteout" is two tons of emotion-- happy, sad, ambivalent, moody, celebratory, dark around the edges, and, dare we say it, conducive to butt-shaking, provided with help from the Blues Explosion's Jon Spencer (guitar, vocals), Mark (the Goats) Boyce on keyboards, and one of the sauciest the rhythm sections ever, Jens Jergensen and Hollis Queens. Also present in the studios, limos, and dressing rooms were producers Tore Johannson and Andy Gill, mixers Jim Sclavunos and Jim Thirlwell, and engineer Bill Emmons.

TheTHE NEED The Need Is Dead
    (CHAINSAW CHAIN20) CD

Released the week of February 14th, 2000

    order from Midheaven mailorder

In examining The Need, let's enlist the help of Rocket correspondent Keyan Maymand, who summarizes what is so captivating about the music made together by Rachel Carns (drums, organ, words, plastics) and Radio Sloan (guitar, bass, wires). "Marked by perplexing time signatures," says Keyan, "an element of weirdness runs through the music. One minute there is crunchy guitar with carefully placed feedback, the next, creeping keyboards." Pervasively lurid and sonically eerie, the music produced by this duo is at once familar and like nothing else. As with everything Rachel touches, the packaging design is an equally arresting melange of vintage post-Structuralist boldness, traditional sideshow bravado and false mustache affixion manual.

Radio (formerly of Mocket, The Ce Be Barns Band, and a bunch of other PacNW showstoppers) and Rachel (formerly of Kicking Giant, The Fakes, Witchypoo, The Ce Be Barns Band, and Mocket) have invited several guests to help construct their creepy spy-core: Marcie Flores sings on a couple tracks; former Melvin Joe Preston plays bass, synthesizer, and sampler here and there; producer Mike Lastra of Smegma adds a spot of theremin where neccessary.

Andre Williams sleeve artANDREW WILLIAMS Lap Dance remix 12"
    (In The Red ITR66) LP

Released the week of February 14th, 2000

    order from Midheaven mailorder

The legendary lord of lascivious lyrics, the baron of badass R'n'B, the duke of dirty-ass rock'n'roll, with backing contributions from his disciples of sleazy soul and primitive raunch, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. This time the NY hipster remix kings team up with the godfather of pornographic R&B sleaze in a tribute to their favorite pasttime. Contains one remix by Jim Waters (producer of Blues Explosion and Doo Rag) and one by Jim Thirwell (of Foetus fame). Both are lengthy and, of course, potent. Packaged inna die-cut "disco" sleeve with prominent graffiti-style sticker.

    • Pornography and big name producers remixing music by big name artists are two things that make the world go 'round

    • This hot, raw single precedes a full length effort (released circa April 1st; stay tuned), featuring members of the MC5, Stooges, Jon Spencer, Cheater Slicks, the Dirtbombs. . . look, do we have to wash your damn car, too?

Crossed Out sleeve artCROSSED OUT (s/t)
    (SLAP A HAM SLAP55) CD/LP

Released the week of February 28th, 2000

    order from Midheaven mailorder

For a band whose existence spanned three short years, Crossed Out's influence has been resoundingly long-lived, not to mention ear-splitting. They've been worshipped as the originators of power violence; in fact, some of their releases have been bootlegged upwards of six times worldwide. This collection assembles the very first official Crossed Out discography release-forty-seven pit-inducing, cranium-crushing tracks! They're all here: the incredibly rare first Slap A Ham seven-inch; tracks from split records with Man Is The Bastard and Drop Dead; tons of previously unreleased tunes, including their demo, a live performance on KSPC radio, and assorted rehearsals. Maybe the other chump in town won't pick up on this one (that's how everyone knows he's a chump, right?), but not you, kingpin. When someone says, "completist collection of the single most influential fastcore band of the '90s," non-chumps like you tell 'em how many.

Milk Cult sleeve artMILK CULT Project M13
    (ZERO TO ONE 0TO1001) CD

Released the week of February 28th, 2000

    order from Midheaven mailorder

The first new release from Milk Cult in nearly four years, this Moroccan Nectar-fueled tech-rock-noise-hop experimental dance adventure to the "Port of the Orient" mixes exotic tradition with urban futurism. The first in a series of recordings, Project M-13's raw materials were gathered in Marseille, France, during a visit made possible by a government-sponsored art grant. Over the course of a month in the spring of 1997, Milk Cult recorded with over 30 musicians and groups of musicians including but not limited to: traditional Corsican singers; Buddhist chanters; Algerian folk improvisors; French folkies; industrial noisicians; rockers; jazzbos; hip hop artists; spoken word artists; electronics experimenters; a 30-piece African orchestra; a Conch player; all of whom played along with backing tracks prepared by Milk Cult but never with each other, resulting in hundreds of hours of recordings to be later edited, played along with, and combined into one of an infinite number of possible combinations.

Although this is the first time Milk Cult has used sampling of other players to such a large extent, they have worked with guests extensively in the past. On the college chart topping '95 release Burn Or Bury, they invited a multitude of musical luminaries ranging from Neurosis to Mike Patton to Carla Bozulich into the studio to "top off" the existing tracks. The '96 release, Bruce Lee Marvin Gaye, found Milk Cult in Tokyo "conducting" and playing along with a group of 15 of Japan's musical nobility. On other past releases Milk Cult took a more classic approach to cut up music, playing instruments themselves or taking samples from existing recordings. For Love God, they teamed up with filmmaker Frank Grow to record a soundtrack to the trailer for Grow's film of the same name. In 1994 Agent Nova did away with collaboration altogether and went solo for Milk Cult Dispatch.

The Quill sleeve artTHE QUILL (s/t)
    (METEOR CITY MCY008) CD

Released the week of February 28th, 2000

    order from Midheaven mailorder

After conquering the Swedish bar circuit during the first third of the decade, the Quill entered Berno studio in Malmoe and recorded their debut CD in just three short weeks. The band signed a deal with Megarock, who released the album in Europe in March 1995. It earned overwhelming praise from critics, receiving a 4-out-of-5 in Raw, and an 81-out-of-100 in Burrn. The album was later voted number 70 in Sweden's biggest newspaper's Top-100-albums-of-the-year poll. Short tours in Sweden and an appeareance at the Karlshamn Rockfestival with bands like Black Sabbath and Fleetwood Mac followed. This reissue features two new bonus tracks.

As with its predecessor, The Quill's second album, Silver Haze (released by Roxon), was recorded at Berno and finished in less than a month. Enthusiastic press and lots of excellent shows in Europe followed, most notably a gig at Sweden Rock Festival where The Quill played with bands like Deep Purple, Mot–rhead, Captain Beyond and Dio. Froghouse, the label run by Leif Edling of Candlemass, subsequently released some 10-inch Quill vinyl, which includes a cover of the Sabbath classic "Fairies Wear Boots." The band has also contributed covers of "Where Eagles Dare" to MeteorCity's Iron Maiden tribute, "Frozen Over" to Record Haven's Captain Beyond tribute, and November's "Mount Everest" to Phantom Music's Power from the North-Sweden Rocks the World (which will also feature Yngwie Malmsteen, Hammerfall and Meshuggah.

    "Brilliant" -Annika Sundbaum-Melin, Aftonbladet (Sweden)
"Magnificent" - Dave Ling, Raw (England)
"Newcomer of the month" -Chris Glaub, Breakout (Germany)
"The Swedish debut of the year" -Joakim Utriainen, Arbetet (Sweden)
"If they were British, they would probably be hailed as one of our brightest hopes" -Andy Barker, Soundbarrier (England)
"The best hardrock band in Sweden" -Tommy Granlund, Barometern/OT (Sweden)
"It doesn't get any better than this" -Jerry Prytz, Close-up (Sweden)

Tiara sleeve artTIARA Again Cast In
    (ANYWAY ANY53) CD

Released the week of February 28th, 2000

    order from Midheaven mailorder

After a variety of personnel changes and numerous releases (including a split seven-inch with Silver Scooter released by Voice of the Sky), Tiara's first full-length has finally arrived. Led somewhat by Eric Rottmayer (whose other recording project, Metronome, with releases on Black Bean & Placenta Tape Club, Magic Eye and a number of Japanese labels, has moved some very gentle folks in Japan to open a record store bearing that very name), Tiara take the slow-building space between emotion and time and create unique sing-along guitar spook-outs. Their nice dual guitar/vocal interplay works like any conversation one has with oneself when trying to figure out what to say to that certain person who drives one crazy both ways: good and bad.

Again Cast In was recorded at Workbook studios in Columbus by the band and Jon Chin during the very hot summer of 1999, and was mastered by Jeff Grahm, whose has previously worked with the New Bomb Turks, Jenny Mae, Cheater Slicks and Bizzy Bone from Bones, Thugs and Harmony.

Revolver USA Distribution's umbrella shelters an extended and charmingly dysfunctional family of manufactured / distributed labels. Most of these companies handle their own publicity and promotion, some have their own websites, and most have bustling, nearly-organized mailorder operations of their own. Our exclusive label roster appears below in the form of links to our Midheaven mailorder database. We carry many, many other labels on a non-exclusive basis.

Only complete dunderheads don't scam MP3s, right? We've now made it very easy for non-dunderheads to access downloadable files under the Midheaven domain. Simple visit our Downloads Browsing Kiosk for a list all our titles featuring MP3, RealAudio and RealVideo files.

Also consider paying a visit to our Midheaven Jukebox. RealAudio-enabled users can hear over 1500 30-second song excerpts from releases by hundreds of artists, all randomly arranged for our visitors who rely upon dependable unpredictability from their RealAudio experience.

Want the inside track on developments at Revolver USA, Midheaven mailorder and the Communion label? Me too. But we'll both have to settle for midheaven.com's News page.

If you have a Frequently Asked Question you'd like to pose, check out our FAQ first. We may have an answer all prepared for you. Our exclusive label list can be found there (and below), as well.

Occasionally bands affilliated with Revolver USA and its exclusive labels perform live. No, it's true. You can be in the same room with these bands, but it involves leaving the house (life is full of trade-offs, isn't it?). Keep up with Revolver USA-associated artists' in-the-flesh forays by checking in with our tour dates page.

Where can you find detailed webpages regarding the Communion label's most recent releases? On the Communion label homepage, claro que si. There you can browse every existing release on the Communion label, listen to RealAudio samples, download free MP3s, and zero in on recent (and otherwise) gorgeousness by The Tower Recordings, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, Village of Savoonga, Alles Wie Gross, Idyll Swords, Mia Doi Todd and Barbara Manning. And don't forget to drop in on those Folk Implosion pages.

We have also set aside three other very special pages for three other very special releases:
