(anticon abr022) CD/2xLP

Released the week of May 20th, 2002

The humble godfather of goth-hop and once-unsung seminal ironman of anticon, alias avenges the downtrodden and abused producer-rapper. Composing music from his deepest shades, this irrefutable jack of all trades drops anchor with a debut solo full length intended to serve as hiphop's response to a Stevie Wonder record, with virtually all writing, composition, and production created by the artist himself. This collection of introspective lyrics rapped over ethereal, minor-chord drones, dark samples, and aggressive, dubbed-out drum beats was recorded in home studios between December 1998 and October 2001. The production is rainy-day contemplative and rhythmically menacing, and the mixes sound simultaneously calculated and spontaneous. As a complete record, the other side of the looking glass is serious and consistent, leaving the listener on the see-through side of a two-way-mirror with a clear sense of what it is to be alias.

Dos EPs

(METEORCITY MCY023) CD

New retrospective album from fuzz-rock pioneers!

With three albums, two EPs, and more than five-hundred live dates under their belts, Nebula's frenetic groove has already secured them a place in rock history. But these bastard offspring of Blue Cheer and Thin Lizzy on crank are just getting started...

Dos EPs is a full-length remixed and remastered collection of '70s-style, pedal-to-the-metal riff-rock from Nebula's two out-of-print EPs, Sun Creature (originally released on Man's Ruin Records), and their half of the Nebula/Lowrider double-EP (MeteorCity), alongside three brand new scorchers that'll sear their brand onto the backside of the new millennium. As the cornerstone of Sub-Pop Records' re-dedication to relevant rock, Nebula couldn't have picked a better time to roll out this all killer re-release of their strongest material.

Right from the moment stoner rock started to become a scene in its own right, rather than just a convenient way to describe a couple bands, Nebula have always stood mountains above all the other originality-free Kyuss wannabes snapping at their feet. Having all cut their teeth as former members of fuzzy rock'n'roll kings Fu Manchu, the beauty of this shit-kicking little three-piece is the scope of influences and range of sound that they manage to incorporate into their collective noise. Nebula have finally broken free from any real association with their former band by making an album that frankly pisses all over the Fu's last King of the Road opus from a great height. --KERRANG!!!

Stockholm 67

(BIRDMAN BMR039) CD

Released the week of May 13th, 2002

order from Midheaven mailorder

In the winter of 1967, a psychedelic-garage-punk band from Woodland Hills, California, arrived in Europe for what would be their first and last tour of the continent. On the strength of their hit single "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night," the band was welcomed with open arms by European rock fans as well as British rock royalty - they smoked out with Hendrix, partied with Brian Jones and Keith Moon, and hung out in the studio with the Beatles - but were also subjected to harassment and ridicule over the fact that their homeland was at war in Vietnam. Yep, good times, good times... Twenty days and six countries later it was all over. Luckily, on the last stop of the tour someone pushed the record button and this artifact is the result.

Stockholm '67 finds the Electric Prunes at the height of the powers. Some ninnies have griped that the 'Prunes were nothing more than a psychedelic one-hit wonder, and a studio project at best. This performance burns the criticism to the ground. Over-amplified and fuzzed to the max, the 'Prunes here are explosive, noisy and wild. This recording proves that the Electric Prunes deserve to be ranked alongside the very best bands of their era.

Birdman Records will simultaneously release a live seven-inch record of the reunited Electric Prunes from June 16, 2001 - their first live performance since 1968.

Timothy Prudhomme; 1900s-2000s (USA). NYC singer-songwriter. Born in California. Raised in Louisiana. Died in Memphis. Began playing at the age of 16 with various new wave/punk rock combos in and around Baton Rouge. In the '80s moved to New York; with no prospects, a move to Silverton, Colorado, with hopes of working in a goldmine proved just as frivolous. Moderate success finally followed with a move to the Bay Area, whence Fuck was formed (though months later Prudhomme would be back in NYC). Over the next seven years, Fuck released five full-length albums and toured the world over, much to the chagrin of less fortunate bands. In 1999, Fuck departed from their label Matador, as Prudhomme relocated to Memphis. Following the release of Cupid's Cactus Fuck began a "prolonged" vacation.

In the interim, Prudhomme has turned to the deep well of talent in Memphis, enjoining the services of friends and acquaintances - Jack Adcock (The Jug Band) on congas and bongos; Alex Greene (BigAssTruck, Lorette Velvette, Reigning Sound) on organs; Megan Reilly on vocals; Stu "Trainwreck" Sikes on drums; Geoff Soule (Fuck) on traps and piano; and Davis McCain on aborted theremin. Most of the songs on With The Hole Dug are of the painterly portrait sort; the subject sitting listlessly dead-center. From the Dickensian "Mr. Lucky" into the late night, early morning "3AM," we view the dark beauty of the hapless and the hopeless, and to surreptitiously eavesdrop on the sounds of the simple, eternal untying of knots.

At the helm, Doug Easley takes on the duties of producer and player extraordinaire. Easley (infamous for his mellifluous pedal steel work with illuminati $2 Guitar, Catpower, Pavement, etc.) proffers a lavish extravagance of starkness; of notes, noize, and specialty knobs. Timothy sings and plays guitar.

Project Blowed has long been a beacon for hip hoppers worldwide looking for something beyond the status quo. The emcees who have come out of Project Blowed have proven themselves to be true lyricists and/or griots trapped in a time where style and intellect are grossly underappreciated. Fat Jack, the most dynamic producer of the L.A. underground, has spent his career cultivating a unique musical sound to match each emcee's brilliant style, and now Massmen re-releases this 39-track anthem to the L.A.underground (and to hip hop itself). Cater to the DJ is the bridge between the heads who like strictly boom bap and the heads who look for more style in a hip hop song. Featuring the talents of Aceyalone, Medusa, Awol One, Abstract Rude, Volume 10, P.E.A.C.E., and many others, this 2xCD is finally home on Massmen, a label that caters to heads of all curvatures.

(METEORCITY MCY022) CD

Featuring Alfredo Hernández of Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age and Ché; Pete Stahl of Goatsnake, Wool, and The Earthlings?; and Mario Lalli of Fatso Jetson and The Desert Sessions, Orquesta del Desierto emerges from within the hell and wonder of the Mojave to redefine desert music, bringing together elements of rock, blues, and Latin music. Tympanic rhythms bounce through the Coachella Valley hills, bracing delicate, acoustic instrumentation and soaring, folk-flavored vocals. Written by producer Dandy Brown in Palm Springs, CA, OdD is performed by desert rock legends with help from The Enigmatic San Jacinto Horns. And although boasting a plethora of heavy rock notables, this project is something entirely different - a twist of folk, a dose of mellow pop, and permeated with the soul and anguish evoked by a man-made paradise rising in the heart of a wasteland.

Music so good it's timeless... you'll love it as much in ten years as you do right now. It's an album that actually smells of the desert, and you'll feel a weird, warm, dry wind while listening to it. -Transit Magazine

Mystical Path of the Number Eighty Six

(HOLY MOUNTAIN 8655) CD

Released the week of May 20th, 2002

Holy Mountain released the first LP by Steven Wray Lobdell's Davis Redford Triad in the spring of 1997, following Lobdell's release from a mental institution and return to playing the guitar. The music just poured out of him. The heavy psychedelic guitar compositions on The Mystical Path-- think Takayanagi Masayuki backed by a Crazy Horse-like force attempting a "version" of Sun Ra's "The Invisible Shield" with organ, analog synth and various other electronics-- managed to pull down maximum sky. Since that time, Lobdell has recorded two more albums for Holy Mountain and has produced two albums by Hochenkeit. After the purchase of a tapedeck similar to the one used for this recording, Mr. Lobdell located a few tracks presumed lost and became inspired to remix the entire album. This reissue restores the original sequence of the album and has new liner notes written by Lobdell. In addition, Holy Mountain is also pleased to announce an East Coast tour by the band to coincide with the reissue of this remarkable album.

Good Night Sleep

(SMELLS LIKE RECORDS SLR046) CD

Released the week of May 13th, 2002

They were a punk band in the early '90s, a free-rock-jazz combo by the mid-'90s, and an alternative-to-indie pop combo at the turn of the millenium. Now with their fifth CD (and third on Smells Like Records) Nod embark upon yet another journey toward aural stupefaction. Good Night Sleep is many things: folksy, artsy, rocksy, bluesy - but most of all, Nodsy.

Levitating somewhere just above lo-fi, Nod surfs easily from genre to genre, with the requisite charm of intact first-take stumblings. The opening track, "The Old Hotel," a dreamy and groovy pop, with spacey, doubled vocals and overdriven yet mild-mannered guitars, is followed by the strange folk of "Walk The Little Man." Scrappy Joe sings in his fairytale-teller voice, serving him especially well on "The Dragon," a Danielsons-like mini-epic that harkens various earlier and simpler times, even as far back as Genesis. Equally lo-fi and arty is "Wispy Woosp," which may remind the listener of a dark, lonely and urban, no-wave past. "Hey You Ride" is a chipper baby Elvis tune, and "Wild Ol' Bill" is minimalist Steely Dan without the anal (p)retention.

When not telling lonely tales without morals about lonely people without morals, Nod provide a startling continuity with their instrumentals - drunken dub debauches collide with fuzzed, electric Fahey fingerings across a skiffle-esque shuffle that can only elicit wild suspicion about northwestern New York state water. All in a day's work, it would appear, for one of the only working rock groups with a genuinely original sound.
