BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL Siberian
Earth Curve (DRUNKEN FISH DF43) CD
Campbell Kneale is a New Zealander with and impeccable ear for layering feedback, cymbals and electronic squall. Does the stillness of Thomas Koner get you There on a regular basis? Maybe some Aube-cious high-end volume stirs your coffee? Pull into the BCM parking lot and discover instant validation. Released the week of October 5th, 1998.

BLUE TILE LOUNGE Half Cut (SMELLS LIKE
RECORDS SLR24) CD
Perth, Australia pedal-pushers god-bliss us all with some 'scape-defining spacerock. None of that analog-come-lately hooey, either. Shipping the week of October 5th, 1998.

RENDERERS A Dream Of The Sea (SILTBREEZE
SB72) CD
Gorgeous. New Zealand folks dwell near territory last seen occupied by
the Walkabouts, Panther Burns and the Carter Family. Simply gorgeous. Released
the week of October 5th, 1998.

RHBAND First Tone (DRUNKEN FISH DF39)
CD
Pack your pipe and loosen your jaws-- the California-based collective known for their extended explorations of the Ur-drone are coming to town. Hide your cracked electronics and homemade long-string instruments, because that's what these inhalers crave. Released the week of October 5th, 1998.

BURNING WITCH Towers (SLAP A HAM SLAP49) LP
Four songs. 35 minutes. On Slap A Ham. Add it up-- negligently slow, thick as a learning-disabled cow, and gooier than a bag of Gummy Bears left in your glove compartment. Plus they're from sunny Southern California, land of some of grind's most mind-roasting combos (see: Pessimiser roster). Reserved: our own molasses-core alcove in the sludge mausoleum. Released the week of October 12th, 1998.

BASSHOLES When My Blue Moon Turns Red Again (IN
THE RED ITR59) CD/2LP
Their fifth album of gritty, weird, punkified blooz scuzz-- but this 24-track recording may surprise those who pigeonhole this two-man band as lo-fi. Potent trans-genre party-people soundtracks. Deee-luxe packaging on the double LP. Released the week of October 19th, 1998.

16 Scott Case (PESSIMISER PESS028) CD
Compilation of out-of-print and hard-to-find excavations: the self-titled 7" originally released by Reverb in 1992 (edition of 500), the "Sailrabbit" 7" on Standard from 1993 (1000 only), and "Preoccupied," originally released by Toy's Factory (Japan) in 1994. Crude, mean, roughewn, forever unforgiving. Released the week of October 19th, 1998.

TWO DOLLAR GUITAR Train Songs (SMELLS
LIKE RECORDS SLR028) CD
Tim Foljahn and friends travel down that dissonant, winsome road once more. Slo' betta blues in an all-instrumental vein that's sure to catch the ears of Bad Seeds and John Fahey fans. Released the week of October 19th, 1998.

SOUNDS OF THE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT RESTROOMS
(PLANET PIMP PPR025) 7"
Gregg Turkington and Simone Dion host this virtual travelogue
through far-flung aviatory loos worldwide. These authentic field recordings
surely demonstrate that Planet Pimp is well on its way to becoming the Folkways
of the novelty 7" collectors' scene. Includes complimentary toilet
seat cover. Released the week of October 19th, 1998.

TALL DWARFS Fifty Flavours of Glue (FLYING
NUN FNCD412) CD
A brand new 50-minute, 17-track snot-along pop racket from the melodically endowed duo of New Zealanders CHRIS KNOX and ALEC BATHGATE. A wonderous potpourri of delightfully crooned rockers, slack-jawed whoop-it-up, Lennon-ish blues, sacrilege and loose synth spacerock. The two have recorded 120+ songs together over the last 17 years, bringing the world some of the most inventive songcraft ever committed to ears-- charged with Mr. Bathgate's brilliant guitar playing, Mr. Knox's superb ear for the happy accident, and the duo's fondness for both grand arrangements and utterly silly sonorities. All merrily glued together and bundled up in a handsome Digipak. Released the week of November 2nd, 1998.

SCARNELLA (s/t) (SMELLS LIKE RECORDS SLR027)
CD
Carla Bozulich and Nels Cline vacation from Geraldine Fibbersdom and stretch out into looser locales with some atmospherique, guitar-centered moods. Lorca-era Tim Buckley covered by first-album-era Throwing Muses? That doesn't begin to describe the post-artrock joy of Scarnella. Judge for yourself. Released the week of November 2nd, 1998.

DUOTRON The Complete Book of Duotron Illustrated (SCRATCH SCR26) CD
Two full albums of music from the Chicago/Portland ensemble! Bulb label LP releases We Modern! We Now! and Batallia Femini! are crammed onto one CD, along with all eight tracks from a split 7" (with Xerobot), AND a previously unreleased spoken word piece called "Stage Fright." Let's lay our cards on the table and agree to disavow that Duotron might present the acceptable/accessible face of No Wave, shan't we? Intentionally, endearingly incompetent guitar playing and a unique rhythmic, um, voice that screams to those who draw no lines between debacle and triumph. Released the week of November 2nd, 1998.

REFUSED The New Noise Theology (HONEY
BEAR HB21) CD
First US release in over two years-- and a departure from their Victory Records-era hardcore. Tuff-gnarl noise rock, The Dischord Sound and the Refused's own straight edge aesthetic jumble together, creating a middle ground separating Fugazi and, say, Propagandhi. This EP, licensed from the Burning Heart label, precedes a full-length Epitaph album. This record sold over 100,000 copies in the band's native Sweden. From Victory to Honey Bear To Epitaph. Think upwardly mobile. Released the week of November 9th, 1998.

RONDELLES (s/t) (SMELLS LIKE RECORDS SLR29)
CD
Albuquerque, New Mexico (now relocated to Washington DC) combo debuts full-lengthwise for Mr. Shelley's Smells Like imprint. Neo-teengarage-pop trio forcefully wields sweetly smart dual female harmonies and gritty guitar/Farfisa stompers that wouldn't sound out of place, segue-like, between Henry's Dress and the bestest nuevo-wave gal-vox punk/pop bop LA could offer in the early 80s. Rhino knows-- they present a Rondelles track on their 90s Teen Bands vs 80s Teen Movies comp. A potential monster in the garage pop history books-- their recent Dub Narcotic Disco Plate confirms it. Released the week of November 9th, 1998.

ROY MONTGOMERY E.N.D. (DRUNKEN FISH DFR027)
7"
Along with an apropos Eulogy for Nick Drake, here are two new tracks of solarized bedroom recordings by the master of murmur and occasional Flying Saucer Attack collaborator. Released the week of November 16th, 1998.
