Blood Bleeds by Vincas

Vincas

Blood Bleeds
Douchemaster

***“Because only about 60 miles separate Athens and Atlanta, you would think that the same sphere of influence would affect both cities. In the past decade, Atlanta has seen the growth of a creatively sustainable music scene, and we nearly forgot about our neighbors up the road. There is no shortage of great bars, restaurants and clubs in Athens, but it’s been a little while since an Athens band made me want to jump in my car and make the trip. VINCAS have given me that much needed excuse. “Blood Bleeds is a monster of a record. They are playing dark and heavy songs that immediately draw Birthday Party and Gun Club comparisons. I’d bet they have some later Scientists records in their collections, too, as there is a discernible element of swampishness weaving itself throughout the record. It’s sexy in a bitter-dark-chocolate kind of way and has a pounding cohesiveness throughout. Vincas demonstrate total control from start to finish, and it’s pretty clear that they didn’t just stumble into a style of music like this. We truly hope the folks over in Athens realize what they’ve got on their hands.”  —Douchemaster Records

Since Gentleman Jesse’s first album came out in the summer of 2008, he’s had plenty of excuses to put the “Gentleman” part of his act to bed. In fact, the Mr. Nice Guy routine landed him in bed for a month after being mugged and beaten with a table leg while he was trying to help two strangers change a tire. When the economy tanked, violent crime in Atlanta exploded, making the city a dreary place to live for a while. In addition, several tragedies hit the Atlanta music scene and the Douchemaster Records family close to home. It was a bad time and Jesse took it very personally. He was close to throwing in the towel and retiring to a dark room with cheap beer and YouTube videos.  To cope with the reality of living in a place that was going straight to hell, Jesse went down to the basement of his house and wrote twenty songs that would become Leaving Atlanta. What could have easily become a bummer record ended up being nothing short of inspiring. The album is bookended by “Eat Me Alive,” an anthem of perseverance that was for Jesse a demon-exercising tool, and another mover titled “We Got to Get Out of Here,” which is less about getting out of an actual location and more about getting out of a state of mind.  Stylistically, Jesse never strays from his bread and butter: short, hook-driven and delicately patterned rock ’n’ roll songs. One could compare him...

Nocturnal Missions by Barreracudas

Barreracudas

Nocturnal Missions
Douchemaster

Somewhere between The Heartbreakers (Petty) and The Heartbreakers (Thunders), Atlanta five-piece The Barreracudas find a shallow well of inspiration just deep enough to produce one of the biggest foot-tappers of the year.  Nocturnal Missions blends elements of dirty ’70s glam and the radio-friendliness of Dwight Twilley and Phil Seymour. The Barreracudas’ sound shouldn’t come as a great surprise as most of these guys have been playing with Gentleman Jesse and His Men for the past couple of years. There’s no Pulitzer-worthy poetry in the lyrics, but the hooks in these songs are more infectious than encephalitis. It’s even got a sweet cover of Cheap Trick’s “Come On, Come On.”  Look for The Barreracudas on tour with Davila 666 in October!

Royal Pendletons, Persuaders, Bad Times, Exploding Hearts, King Louie One Man Band, Kajun SS, Loose Diamonds, Black Rose Band and likely a dozen more. King Louie Bankston’s impressive résumé has the tendency to make regular folk feel unproductive. Now, he adds Missing Monuments to the list. Painted White, the group’s debut full-length, is a testament to King Louie’s ability to master just about any style outside of rap. The album is clean, jangly, full of hooks and Bankston’s signature coarse melodies. Covering all the necessary bases, it’s got rock ’n’ roll jams, ballads, a noodley track showcasing guitarist Julian Fried’s guitar skills, and fan favorite “(It’s Like) XTC,” a song that sounds so much like The Raspberries one might wonder if it’s an obscure cover.  While many are familiar with the King Louie on stage and the King Louie that parties your town to smithereens after his set, Painted White shows King Louie as the hardest working and most talented songwriter around. Look for the group on tour with the legendary Paul Collins this summer.  JULY 2011 TOUR DATES W/ PAUL COLLINS 7/13 • Music Box, Mobile, AL 7/14 • Siberia, New Orleans, LA 7/15 • Ole Town, Jackson, MI 7/16 • Hi-Tone, Memphis, TN 7/18 • JJ’s Bohemia, Chattanooga, TN 7/19 • The Earl, Atlanta, GA

***Denmark’s COLA FREAKS sound like a scheduled, perfectly executed panic attack, employing herky-jerky song structures and frequent direction changes while commanding total attention. The six-piece has released a series of impressive singles for which they’ve garnered comparisons to legendary European KBD-era bands of yore and the likes of Jay Reatard—indeed, Mr. Reatard recruited Cola Freaks members for his backing band in his final live lineup. Douchemaster is pleased to present the release of Cola Freaks’ self-titled debut LP. Featuring eleven tracks of quick, clean and nervous new wave / punk rock, the album is as scrupulous as it is frenzied and eerie. Catch the band on their upcoming May 2011 US tour!

***“Our new years resolution in 2011 was to refrain from using the words ‘pop’ or ‘catchy.’ We’re sticking to our guns on this release at least as this LP is a punk behemoth. If you remember the FRANTIC, you know that MIKE and BRANNON don’t pick up instruments without asking themselves what Rick Agnew would do. This record is short and deliberate, but you can definitely pick up tinges of post punk too. The Adolescents worship continues, but you get the idea they may be secretly digging Warsaw. Comes with a download, fool.” Edition of 1,000 copies on black vinyl.

***TALBOT ADAMS was the front man for THE BLACK AND WHITES. With the birth of his twin boys, Talbot had to keep the noise down a bit and wrote some quieter stuff. Super sweet and frankly touching stuff from former wild man turned dad. He does it Douche Master style with four songs all under two minutes. Packed full of Talbot's patented male oooohhhs. 500 pressed.

***“Sans objectivity, I must freely admit that I fucking love this record! TJ lives in Chicago and plays in COCOCOMA. The other dudes are somewhere in Indiana. The Half Rats are sort of Doo-wopish on a poor man’s recording budget. It’s catchy as hell but not overly joyful or silly. An undeniable sixties vibe and great vocal hooks. ***“This record is sort of the direction LOUIE was going with LOOSE DIAMONDS, but without all the genre hopping. This stuff is boogie free, straight forward, hook laden rock n’ roll. He told us before we heard it that it was the catchiest stuff he’d worked on in years, and he was true to his word. The only thing more exciting than this single is the LP they’re about to start recording. Hell Yes! Edition of 1000.”—Douchemaster

***“We reached across the pond again and came up, this time, with an LP from France’s CRUSADERS OF LOVE. With members of HAPPY BURGER, we figured we probably had as close to a sure thing as we were gonna get. If you’re familiar with their singles, you’ll probably notice a departure from the psychedelic in favor of garage pop on the LP. With the exception of a track on the B-side that sounds kind of like Spacemen 3, it’s a pretty jangly and happy record throughout. US tour begins May 30th.”—Douchemaster

***Denton, Texas is the equivalent for Douchemaster Records of a bar you can always go into and always expect to get laid afterwards. In this case she's particularly young and hopped up on speed. If you missed the two BAD SPORTS singles from 2008, then you don't know about their major league hooks and their seemingly unchallenged quickness. Bad Sports are a three piece that features DANIEL from WAX MUSEUMS and GREG RUTHERFORD from HIGH TENSION WIRES. ORVILLE just sits around and writes most of the songs. Bad Sports are a bit more playful, but don't be surprised if this record reminds you slightly of The Reds or the first Marked Men LP.

***BACK IN PRINT!!! THE WHITE WIRES are a three piece from Ottawa. This LP was originally released by Going Gaga Records on November 8, 2008 in a quantity of 325 copies. Those of you lucky enough to score a copy before it went out of print were well aware of how urgently this record needed to be available again, and we are flattered to be the people responsible for that. It's a perfect summer time record yet it is just in time for the holiday season for the second consecutive year. The White Wires have found a harmonious balance somewhere between the lands of goofy and cool, and their songs reflect that brilliantly. This LP features nine songs of maximum sing-a-long-ability without a trace of pretense. A couple of listens and you'll be planning imaginary BBQ's with The White Wires as your entertainment and guests of honor.

Winchester Mystery House by Hex Dispensers

Hex Dispensers

Winchester Mystery House
Douchemaster

***Austin's HEX DISPENSERS are back with their sophomore album, and it pretty much picks up exactly where the previous LP ended. If you've been paying attention over the past few years, you know that the Hex Dispensers are masters in the art of spewing forth short bursts of haunted fury. D~M~R isn't exactly known for it's story tellers, but Winchester Mystery House offers a thematically torturous series of songs concentrating on the horrors of love, life, sailing, skin masks, and the end of it all. The good news is that there are twelve songs, so there is an opportunity to feel satiated. One of those songs being a Devo cover, and another being "My Love is a Bat" from a Euro tour single that most of us on this side of the water didn't get a chance to own. No European Export.

***BACK IN STOCK!!! “I know just what you're thinking. Believe me I do. When GG (aka GREG CARBONA) called back in February to tell me that his best girl and her friends had started a band and that he was playing in it, I couldn't imagine having any interest in this recording. Then I heard the recording, and within about thirty seconds I was in. In keeping with tradition of D~M~R releases, the backbone here is simplicity. The ballad-esque intro to “Heart Collector” makes me think that they would have preferred to sound like a Spector-style girl group, but the lack of Phil and his song writing talents allows them come off as a very competent Teen Line style band. ASHLEY’s vocals may be the star of the show. They sound experienced and even sultry at times while retaining the innocent charm that allows a band with this sort of pop sensibility work....even if she is singing about lighting dudes on fire. Super cool Sponsors cover on the flip side. Edition of 1000.”—Douchemaster

***THE BARRERACUDAS are part of new wave of Atlantans strapping on guitars for Douchemaster. These dudes have been kicking around the ATL for years under different titles, and they've finally found a home at the bottom. It's got a generous dose of ‘70s bar rock vibe but with quicker tempos and moderately blown out vocals. It's easy to utilize influences from 1970 to '75 and come off like clowns wearing ass hats, but the The Barreracudas did a great job of avoiding the pretense of the era and getting it right on the money.

***BOBBY UBANGI is the epitome of fundamental rock’n'roll. Active ingredients on this one include: house, four-track, instruments that touring bands accidentally left at previously mentioned house, and friends with rudimentary playing skills that like to hang out at previously mentioned house. Short and simple has been Bobby's style for years, and he's sticking to his guns. Douchemaster is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Mr. Ubangi, as he has been an absolute inspiration to the label and the Atlanta music scene.

Pizza All Around

***In spite of living in the heart of the culinary universe, our French friends known as HAPPY BURGER have found none other than pizza and burgers as their songwriting muses. The argument is as fundamental as chicken vs. the egg, but in the eyes and mouths of these Frenchies, the cheeseburger loses a nail biter to the pizza. Four songs. Simple and short with mandatory French garage production. Jonathan Richman would be proud. Jacques Pepin would be horribly disappointed.

***The Bay Area’s latest buzz is from a band called BUZZER. This proto-punk three-piece features dudes from THE IMPEDIMENTS behind ANDY JORDON of the CUTS and THE TIME FLYS. Buzzer’s debut three-song single generates the same mid ‘70s adoration as Jordan’s previous projects sans the sleaziness of the Flys and the drug induced euphoria into which The Cuts would often drift. The marching snare on “Disco Kiddz” makes you wanna get real high and play flag football with your not-to-particularly-tough friends. “Cool Feeling” is essentially a glam popper, but the other two tracks sorta sound like early Pere Ubu with Verlaine on vocals.

***APACHE hails from the Bay Area and features Carlos Palacios from The CUTS. While the band in general does tend to write proto-punkesque songs, the two featured on this well produced single are fairly straight forward pop songs. ***Oakland California's Time Flys are back with a brand new single. Based upon their songwriting history, you may not be shocked at the stoner intro to “The In Crowd.” What follows, however, is possibly the best two minutes of music thiis group have bestowed upon us to this date. The Time Flys keep with their recipe of proto-punk, glam, and sleaze but manage to offer something a little different from their previous releases. The production here is relatively slick but with enough grime and attitude to make it a great rock n' roll single. First 100 are on gold vinyl.
