***"In advance of their new record due out next year, HOSPITAL SHIPS give us "Come Back To Life," a wistful waltz extending some of the softer acoustic tendencies of Lonely Twin (Graveface, 2011.) H.S. leader JORDAN GEIGER (MINUS STORY, SHEARWATER) is joined by members of APPLESEED CAST and OLD CRANES. Hospital Ships enjoys contemplating the death of the Sun, campfires, and rye whiskey, all recommended accompaniments to their song. THE HIPS are a Lawrence super-group of sorts, bringing together principals from DRAKKAR SAUNA, FOURTH OF JULY and OLD CRANES. Some of the soulful folk of those bands is evident here, with a new funkiness, echoing The Band.

***MOUTHBREATHERS follow-up 7-inch to the In The Red Records release of the “Anxiety / The Creeper” single is said by many to be their most expansive song to date, and that is not because “Die Alone” clocks in at 5 minutes plus. Bleak arrangements over pulsing dead panned drums, slither their way underneath KYLE GOWDY’s aching vocals. The song slides along like a dark cloud until it finally explodes into an all out rage. Flip it over and you got “Validation,” a surf influenced number by land-locked Lawrence, KS boys, where their idea of “surfing” is ghost riding a stolen motorcycle into a tire fire. Enjoy.
