***PENETRODE emerges from Philadelphia with a powerhouse debut LP. Dramatic, intense and precisely played hardcore punk! Penetrode oozes attitude in a way most contemporary bands can only aspire to. “First full-length release from these Philly hardcore freaks. The more I listen to this, the more I like it. While all rooted in noisy, dark hardcore, the songs are all very distinct from each other and occasionally go from fast punk to slow dirges, like on 'Psychic Death.' There are some sonic similarities to bands like GAG and NERVOSAS, but the real stand-out here is vocalist/artist Bootsie. The vocals go from sung to shrieked to spoken and back again, with a distinctive yelp at the end of many lines. They’re great and sound confident, passionate, and exciting. Every song is a banger, but I keep going back to 'Ebb & Flow.' It’s got layers of negative bummer punk distortion with a catchy opening riff, time changes, dissonant vocals, and lyrics like (I think), 'Pick me up and spit me out.' It’s basically everything I want in a punk song. Check it out—this is a killer tape from a killer band.”—Nick Odorizzi (MRR #463 • DECEMBER 2021)

Life Is Pain Idiot by Liquids

Life Is Pain Idiot
Violent Pest

***From the fine minds at Drunken Sailor (UK), Computer Human (Aus), Nail Biter (Shipshewana) and Violent Pest (Chicago) comes: LIQUIDS—Life Is Pain Idiot LP. After a year plus lingering in the purgatory of the “post 2020 record pressing plant supply chain hell”, Liquids Life Is Pain Idiot finally emerges on the vinyl record format. Proper record sales protocol now demands a listing of the physical features of the record, I mean it better be good to wait this long. And it is a real blow-out of a physical package but I’m not going to spoil the exquisite details for you here. If you buy this record, you want it for the music no doubt. The music is really the only part that matters, right? Well, ok if you must know, it’s a regular record, black vinyl. Liquids recorded this album (a contemporary masterpiece of Midwestern misery) with the help of ERIK NERVOUS. Then Erik mixed, mastered and released it via his label Nail Biter Records. L Includes a surprise extra flexi disc with four bonus songs and a huge lyric sheet / poster. limited edition of 1376 world wide.

***Five tracks of upfront hardcore punk for 2021: guns, booze and cops—from Nashville with hate. We could tell you about how Body Cam slams out five sick tunes in five minutes on this EP but hey it’s the Twenty-First century you don’t need us to do that for you. Thanks to the internet critics and middlemen are obsolete, just take a listen and decide for yourself how hard this one slaps.

***Computer Human, Drunken Sailor and Violent Pest have joined forces to bring you Erik Nervous’ newest album in physical form. Now available on red, black or white wax in the hemisphere of your choosing. Recorded by Erik in 2020 and set into vinyl in 2021 for your consumption. "ERIK dropped the BETA BLOCKERS for this LP; he’s going solo and the results are marvelous. Eleven tracks of DEVO-worshipping, synth-laden Midwest garage rock which sometimes veers into absolute hardcore mayhem. Songs are fast, hooks are catchy, riffs are sick, guitar solos are quick and frantic, with a vital impulse to push things to the extreme which is very alluring and fun. This kind of sound’s been on a revival kick of sorts lately, I haven’t been that interested in it to be honest, but ERIK NERVOUS delivers. Just listen to the chaotic opener “Our Hungry Fruit,” ERIK never lets up the intensity throughout the record. This was released on cassette last year but now you can get it on red, white, or black vinyl. Be stiff!"—Miguel Franco, MRR #458

***"RECOMMENDED! Vinyl debut for this Chicago three piece after a much-hyped demo from a coupla years back. The Pornography Glows play a stripped down and trebly brand of punk/DIY rock. One of the only recent bands to legitimately remind me of Big Lizard In My Backyard era Dead Milkmen, mixed with a bit of that jerky Urinals/100 Flowers swing, and the snotty nihilism of the Feederz. Seven tracks on this EP, all rocking and clocking in under the two minute mark. Porno Glows are about as arty as they are straightforward, which is a great combination in my books...a band that isn't attempting to play beyond their abilities but also has something cool to add to the conversation."—Feel It Records
